Earl "Scott" Spangler

Earl "Scott" Spangler, age 76, of Wytheville, VA, formerly of Double Shoals,
NC, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at his residence under hospice
care after suffering a heart attack two weeks earlier. Scott was a
businessman of many interests. He was the founder and former owner of
Thunder Valley Speedway, a cattle farmer, a grading contractor, a business
owner in Wytheville, and land developer among his many vocations. He
enjoyed car races, farming, horses, and wagon trains.

Scott never met a stranger and turned acquaintances into friends easily. He
committed his life, talents, and resources in helping others. One of his
favorite activities was hosting barbecue socials for his community of
friends and family with Pauline's excellent help.

Born June 8, 1941 in Cleveland County to the late Worth Edwin Spangler and
Gertrude Scott Spangler, he was a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church and
attended First Christian Church in Wytheville, Virginia. In addition to
his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin Spangler.

He is survived by his companion, Pauline Gordon of Wytheville, VA; daughter,
Donna Sue Spangler of Casar, NC; sister and brother-in-law Mary Blanton and
Max of Shelby, NC; sister, Vicki Spangler of Charlotte, NC; and Pauline's
daughters, Lisa Hodge of Rural Retreat, VA, Judy Powers of Crockett, VA,
son, Bryan Gordon of Wytheville, VA; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren;
also his numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be in the fellowship hall at Double Shoals Baptist Church in
Shelby from 1 until 2:45 pm, Monday, June 19, 2017.

Funeral service will immediately follow at 3 pm in the sanctuary with Rev.
Preston Sartelle officiating. Burial will follow in the Double Shoals
Baptist church cemetery.
