Ed Shirah

In loving remembrance of Ed Shirah, who departed this earthly realm on February 2, 2026, at his residence in Shelby, North Carolina, we reflect upon a life richly lived and fully embraced. Born on September 27, 1941, in Columbia, South Carolina, Willie was a man of distinct character and enduring dedication.
Ed pursued his dreams with vigor, having studied at the University of South Carolina for two years and he earned a degree in Textiles. His educational achievements laid the foundation for a successful career that spanned many years. He worked diligently and ultimately retired from Dover/Azdel Textile and Manufacturing, where his contributions were felt deeply in the fabric of the community.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Willie had a zest for life that resonated with all who knew him. An ardent fan of Nascar, he found inspiration and excitement in the races, with Richard Petty holding a special place in his heart. His passion extended beyond the racetrack, as he cherished the moments spent camping and traveling with his beloved wife, Kay, whose memory remains woven into the very essence of his being. Their adventures were filled with laughter and joy, creating a tapestry of memories that will be treasured by their family.
Ed's love for family and friends was profound and unwavering. He is survived by his daughters, Cindy Shirah Nunnery and her husband Jeff of Shelby, NC, and Lisa Shirah Warren and her husband Banzen, also of Shelby, NC. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: James Edward Nunnery and his wife Victoria from Wilmington, NC; Joshua Luke Nunnery of Harrogate, TN; Sierra Grace Warren and Eliza Charis Warren, both of Shelby, NC. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit as they navigate through life.
Ed's journey through life was marked by the unwavering love of those he leaves behind, including the cherished memories of his mother, Juanita Eliza Humphries Shirah, his father, Willie Ray "Bill" Shirah, and his beloved wife, Kay Byars Shirah, as well as the infant son he lost, Willie Edward Shirah Jr. The impact of these relationships shaped him into the nurturing figure that was loved by many. He is also mourned by his dear sister, Joann Shirah Derrick, and her husband Paul and sons, Allen and Dwayne of Leesville, SC, who will forever hold dear the bond they shared.
As we bid farewell to Willie Edward Shirah, we celebrate the indelible mark he left on our lives. His warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will resonate through the hearts of his family and friends, echoing in the stories shared and the lessons imparted. His journey may have come to a close, but his spirit shall forever remain a guiding light in our lives.
