Elizabeth Spake Smith, age 100, died Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Carolinas Health Care Cleveland. Born on January 7, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mattie Sheppard Spake. Elizabeth was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served many years an Officer in the Golden Links Sunday School Class. Elizabeth graduated from Shelby High School and Blantons Business College in Asheville. She retired from The Shelby Star. She enjoyed going on Cruises, traveling, sewing, cooking, but especially spending time with family and friends. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her husbands, Bennett Teele and Ronald E. Smith; three brothers, Everett Spake, Wesley Spake, and Charles Spake; a sister, Ruth Spake; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Spake and Edith Spake; a brother-in-law, J. Don Shields; a nephew, Brad Shields and wife Jane Kathryn Shields; a niece, Willa Sue Shields Whitaker Schuetz.

Elizabeth is survived by three brothers, Bobby Spake and wife Faye of Shelby, John Ray Spake of Shelby and Henry Spake of Shelby; a sister, Martha Jane Shields of Shelby; two stepsons, Robert E. Smith and wife Jean of North Myrtle Beach SC, and Chris Smith and wife Jane of Lumberton; and four step grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Clint Padgett officiating. Private burial will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
