Evelyn Brown West

Evelyn Brown West went to meet her Lord the evening of March 22, 2018. She was born in Wilmington, NC on September 4, 1924 to Albert and Vila Brown. After graduating from Women's College (UNC-G), she taught school in Wilmington, Waco, Earl and Shelby. For several years she sold real estate in Shelby. In 1984, when Evelyn was 60 years old, she started Hospice of Cleveland County and then ran it for 10 years, until the Wendover Hospice House had been built.

Evelyn and her husband of 67 years, James A. West, have three daughters: Evelyn Ormond (John) of Wilmington, NC; Kathy Lewis (Greg) of Greenville, SC; and Betsy West (Dee) of Charlotte. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Kate Altmix and Daniel Lewis of Atlanta; John-James Ormond of Wilmington, NC; and Madeleine Ormond of New York City as well as four great-grandchildren, Evy, Clover and Dottie Altmix and Magnolia Lewis.

During her marriage to J. A., Evelyn led the way in creating an interesting and full life, with the full cooperation of her husband. They traveled all over the United States as well as to Canada with the girls and later all over the world together. She also designed and supervised the building of a home at 121 Hillside Drive, intended to serve her and J.A. throughout their life. They raised their girls there for 20 years and then built a house on Moss Lake, where they lived for 30 years. Five years ago, they needed to move into town and were able to repurchase the Hillside Drive home.

She and J.A. joined First Baptist Church in 1950 and have taught Sunday school, served as Deacons, visited the sick and shut-ins, and served on various boards both at FBC and in the community. For a decade in the early 1980s, they were part of launching Christopher Road Baptist Church.

Evelyn was a wonderful Christian as well as a generous and dedicated wife and mother. She was also a wonderful friend and mentor to scores of people. She was an extraordinarily dynamic and alive person who loved greatly and was greatly loved. She will be sorely missed.

The family will receive friends in the Ladies Parlor at First Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Tuesday March 27th, with a funeral service to follow in the Chapel at 3:00 with Rev. Tony Tench officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; as Hospice held a special place in Evelyn's heart.

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Mrs. West.
