Evelyn Elaine Harrill Spangler

Evelyn Elaine Harrill Spangler passed away on January 15, 2018 surrounded by her family at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby, NC. A native of Cleveland County, Evelyn was born October 18, 1926 to Michaux DeWitt Harrill and Essie Fay Horn Harrill.

Evelyn grew up attending Double Shoals Baptist Church where she enjoyed playing the piano and singing in the choir. She graduated from both Gardner Webb University and Wake Forest University. While at Wake Forest, Evelyn sang in the choir and later was part of a singing group that performed in churches and for special events. After college, she returned to Cleveland County where she taught English and Spanish at Polkville High School.

On December 17, 1950, she married Earl Webb "Bud" Spangler at Double Shoals Baptist Church. Together, they actively engaged in family, church and community life. Evelyn became a member of First Baptist Church in 1950 where Bud had been a member since 1942. First Baptist Church provided a strong spiritual foundation for their children and has continued to minister and serve as a source of spiritual comfort and joy. Evelyn served her community in many ways such as with the Junior Charity League of Shelby, Church Circles, Book Club, and a bridge club that cared for each other over 60 years.

Evelyn Spangler was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, of 53 years, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michaux Dewitt Harrill, and her brother, Edwin Ralph Harrill. Surviving family members are their four children: Joan (Rob) Means of Yadkinville, Patty (David) Russell of Waxhaw, Ernie (Clara) Spangler of Shelby, and Carol Spangler Henry of Shelby. Grandchildren are Nicholas (Monica) Means, Landon (Rachel) Means, Christopher Means, Julie Russell, Ernest (Sherard) Spangler, Kathryn (Tom) Kimmel, Margaret (Robbie) Thomas, and Steven Henry. The four great grandchildren are Slayt Means, Porter Means, Sam Spangler, and Evelyn Means.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 19 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, 106 Cherryville Road, Shelby, NC. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 20 at 11:00 am in the Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church of Shelby, 120 N. Lafayette Street, Shelby,NC. Reverend Tony Tench will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Shelby, 120 N. Lafayette Street, Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150, or to the donor's charity of choice.
