Floyd Wright,

Floyd Wright, 85, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby.

Dr. Wright was born on September 14, 1938 in Cleveland County, NC a son of the late Newland Cline Wright and Vangie McSwain Wright. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cherryville. Dr. Wright retired after a long career in education. He started his career at Piedmont High School and then Burns High School where he was a baseball and basketball coach. He then served as assistant principal of Cherryville High School, served in the Horry County, SC school district and retired as superintendent of Marlboro County Schools. Dr. Wright was an advocate for recreation for children and has a baseball field in Cherryville that bears his name. He was inducted into the Gardner Webb Basketball Hall of Fame. Dr. Wright served as a former Gaston County Commissioner and also served on various boards including the Gaston Memorial Hospital Board and Gaston College Board.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Meredith Eunice Wright.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Sara Hicks Wright of the home; a daughter Mary Alison Painter of Lake Norman; two sons, Carl David Wright of Cherryville; James Floyd Wright of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Dean Wright of Hickory; five grandchildren, Tyler Cline Wright, Dr. Charles "Charlie" Wright, Mary Katherine Henry, Andrew Floyd Wright, McKinsey Skye Wright.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00PM on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville with the Rev. Ralph Painter officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
