Foothills Farmers Market To Get New, Permanent Home!
Current parking lot at the corner of Marion & Morgan Streets
This year will be the last year that the Foothills Farmers Market will be held and located on Washington Street at the historic court square in Uptown Shelby. The program which embraces “We Grow What We Sell” and “Local Farms, Local Food” concepts will be in a brand new home in 2012.
The new location will be on West Marion Street between Morgan and Trade Streets in the current parking lot and the design for the open air building has just been completed by Mark Patterson of the Patterson Design Group. Referred to as The Foothills Farmers’ Market Shade Pavilion, the back-in/drive-in spaces are ten feet by twenty feet.
The attractive multi-purpose shade pavilion is the result of a partnership between NC Cooperative Extension, Cleveland County and the City of Shelby. This environmentally friendly facility will feature roof-mounted solar panels to generate electricity for cold storage, lights, fans and electrical outlets. Added amenities will include restrooms and enclosed storage for supplies and equipment , and will be environmentally friendly. It will also have be able to accommodate the secure processing of EBT payments (credit, debit and Food Stamp cards) and should add to the local farmer’s income.
This facility will be a great addition to uptown Shelby and will also be used as a sheltered venue for entertainment, community awareness, public engagement and promotional events.
Without a doubt, the new Foothills Farmers’ Market Shade Pavilion is yet another display of the growing resurgence of Shelby and Cleveland County.
