Franklin C. Sweezy, Jr.

Franklin Curtis Sweezy, Jr., 87, of Shelby, NC passed away Friday, December 9, 2022 at his home in Shelby.

Franklin was born in Shelby, NC on July 25, 1935 to the late Franklin Curtis Sweezy, Sr. and Lula Poole Sweezy.

Franklin graduated from Number 3 High School in 1953 and Berry College in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1958-1960. Franklin was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and sang in the Keenager Choir and Sanctuary Choir. He retired from Hoechst Celanese in 1997 with 32 years of service with perfect attendance.

Franklin is preceded in death by his loving wife, of 59 years, Joyce Sweezy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, McCellan Sweezy, killed in Italy during World War II, Ward Sweezy; sisters, Vernie Philbeck, Brenda Carter, and Ruth McSwain.

Franklin is survived by his daughter, Ginger Sweezy Burns and her husband, David Burns; granddaughter, Savannah Burns, and grandson, Noah Burns. Also left to cherish his memory are sisters, Lois Edwards, Doris Werling, brother, Gerald Sweezy and his wife, Cornelia. Franklin is also survived by sister in laws, Martha Stickland, Nancy Kendrick and her husband, Joe, numerous nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was an avid Atlanta Braves and North Carolina Tarheels fan. Franklin was known to read the entire Bible, every year, from beginning to end. He was intrigued by solving different types of puzzles, especially sudoku puzzles, word searches, and crossword puzzles.

One of his favorite sayings he would tell his grandchildren was, "I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck."

The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the care provided to Franklin by Hospice Cleveland County.

To honor the life of Mr. Franklin Curtis Sweezy, Jr., a graveside service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Cleveland Memorial Park. Words of encouragement will be offered by Dr. Carroll Page and the U.S. Army to render honors for those in attendance.

Memorial donations may be offered to Elizabeth Baptist Church, 301 N. Post Rd., Shelby, NC 28152, or Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, NC 28150.
