Friends Pay Tribute To Gary Patterson
Standing (l to r) are Stan Shaw, David “Batman” Queen, Joe Champion, Barry Blackburn and Mike Terres of the group. In front is Gary with his dad, Roscoe and mom, Jeri.
Since the mid 80’s, one of the local pioneers who introduced many people to the sport of cycling is Gary Patterson. Gary loves the sport and has enjoyed helping and teaching anyone interested. In addition to being a cycler himself, he is very knowledgeable about all aspects of cycling and was often seen at Schanewolf’s Cycle Sport on West Marion St., Shelby. Gary was so good that he could build a cycling wheel from scratch. He believes in the ethic of the sport and the team spirit of staying together. As a founding member of the Foothills Cyclists, Gary became the person that everyone looked up to and asked for help. Many cyclists said: “If it wasn’t for Gary, many of us would not be cycling.” The sports love of Gary Patterson’s life came to an end seven years ago when he was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration. The disease is similar to Lou Gehrig’s Disease and is actually a group of brain disorders. Gary is currently in a wheel chair. He attends the Life Enrichment Center and deeply misses his fellow cyclists. His wish to be reunited with them was fulfilled on Monday, April 23rd, as the group was reconciled. This effort, headed by Stan Shaw, was attended by family, friends and others from the LEC. Many stories and laughs were shared about this very special cyclist and guest of honor. It was an uplifting time of admiration for Gary Patterson. Even in sickness, Gary continues to be an inspiration to everyone. He is grateful for all the prayers that are being lifted up for him and asks that others continue to pray for him. He says, “Don’t give up on me.”
