Got Milk?
Burns student Jonathan Williams, teaches ten year old Andrew how to milk a cow.
The Burns High School FFA Dairy Judging Team earned the opportunity to compete in the North American International Livestock Expo this November 6th thru 8th in Louisville, Kentucky. In order to fund and make the trip possible, Shane McKee, the school’s FFA Advisor, came up with the idea of bringing dairy cows to the Cleveland County Fair and asking $1.00 for those who would like to try milking a cow. Each participant got the opportunity to try their skills and was also given a 1/2 pint of milk that was donated by Pet. T-Shirts for youngsters and adults were also sold. The cows came from Bill Cochran’s dairy farm in Waynesville, N.C. The idea turned out to be better than expected. Shane said “I’m overwhelmed with the response!”  Between the “udder delight” of milking the cows and the T-Shirt sales, the team raised $3800. That’s more than enough to get the ladies out to Louisville for the competition. Yes, I said ladies! It turns out that the Burns ladies will be judging the dairy cows in the competition. They will compete with teams from all 50 states. We wish the gals all the best and hope they return the champions!
