Gussie Mae Brown

Ms. Gussie Mae Brown, age 92, departed this life on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at White Oak Manor Nursing Center in Kings Mountain, NC. She was born on March 7, 1927 in Gaston County, NC to the late Mary Bell Kerans Brown and Hooker Johnson.

In the early 1950's, she moved to Cleveland County, NC. She was employed in the industrial field for many years and in the latter part of her life became a foster grandparent at James Love Elementary School. She loved working with the children there.

Ms. Brown was a member of Vestibule A.M.E. Zion Church in Kings Mountain where she was a deaconess and served through the years as an usher and choir leader. She furthered served by helping to provide transportation to members to and from church. Always an outgoing person, she never met a stranger and enjoyed helping people. She also enjoyed sewing, working with her flowers and baking especially her German chocolate cakes which she was famous for.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine Brown, one grandson and great-grandson and numerous siblings of which she is the last of.

She leaves to cherish fond memories of her, three daughters, Emma Gopie (Robert) of Bloomfield, CT, Willie Mae Sanchez of Hudson, NC and Mary Webber (Jerome) of Shelby, NC; ten grandchildren including one that was raised in the home, Freddie F. Johnson; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; forty-seven great-great grandchildren; two special friends, Marian Hunt and Johnnie Hastings and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 4:00 PM at Vestibule A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:30 PM until 4:00 PM on Sunday. Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloemortuary.com. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
