Habitat raises funds, awareness through home show

Thinking of remodeling? Need a boost for your New Year's resolutions? Want to get a jump start on your spring garden? If any of these sound like you, mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. On those days the Second Annual Shelby Home, Garden & Lifestyle Show will take place at the LeGrand Center in Shelby.
The Cleveland County chapter of Habitat for Humanity and its ReStore are partnering with Shelby's Dragonfly Marketing to plan and implement the show.
"We are planning a 'Local Expert' stage that will feature seminars by local tradespeople on a variety of home, garden and lifestyle topics," says Kim Davis of Dragonfly Marketing. "Those attending the show will be able to get valuable information for new home construction, home remodeling, outdoor landscaping and more."
Show hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, and free for children under 6. All ticket sale proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland County's next home build.
Organizers hope that this event will raise public awareness about the Habitat and ReStore mission and will help raise funds for future homes. Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit, working in nearly 1,400 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries, according to the organization's website. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The Cleveland County Habitat chapter was affiliated in 1987 and built its first house in 1988. The organization has built more than 20 houses in the last 10 years.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at discounted prices. ReStores are independently owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. Proceeds are used to help both local and international Habitat efforts. The Cleveland County Habitat ReStore opened more than eight years years ago and is located at 323 W. Grover St., Shelby.
Vendors for the Home, Garden and Lifestyle Show will be accepted until
Jan. 30. Anyone interested in being a vendor should contact Stephanie Davis at 704-600-6599 or Scott Mull at 704-482-6289.
