Hessie K Bowman
Hessie K Bowman, 102, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Friday, September 21, 2012 at Wendover Hospice. Born on March 6, 1910 in Rutherford County she was the daughter of the late Zephaniah and Jessie Bell Laughridge Kanipe. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Charles E. Bowman; 5 brothers,, Clayton Kanipe, Robert Kanipe, Hoyle Kanipe, Rev. Joe Kanipe, Gene Kanipe; 2 sisters, Vivian Costner, Syble Dillingham. She was a faithful member of the Lafayette Street Methodist Church, where she served on several committees, taught primary class for thirty years, and loved her Annie Laurie Circle. Her love was children and she worked for the Foster Grandparent Program at Boiling Springs Baptist Church Daycare until the age of 95. In 1994, Governor Jim Hunt presented her with the reward of Foster Grandparent of the Year for Western North Carolina. She also worked as a nanny taking care of a loving great niece and great nephew for many years.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and a member of Shelby Mill Women’s Club, where she worked for many years and volunteered at the hospital as a Pink Lady. She enjoyed learning new things and working with her hands. She quilted, sewed, knitted and crocheted. She took ceramics in her seventies, piano at the age of eighty and learned to play simple hymns. She was a wonderful cook and known for her delicious cakes. Hessie loved flowers and grew prize roses.  She also was an avid reader.  She was a loving person who cared for others and made friends wherever she went.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who is survived by a daughter, Judy Whisnant and husband Hershel; three grandchildren, David Whisnant, Mark Whisnant and wife Tammy, and Carol Whisnant all of Shelby; a great granddaughter, Leah Grace Whisnant; a sister-in-law Eloise Kanipe; special great niece and great nephew, Michael Hummelsine, and Kelly Pope and many other nieces and nephews.

A Going Home Celebration will be held on Monday September 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Dr. Tom Steagald and the Rev. David Rabb will be officiating with the eulogy to be given by Glenn Williams. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00pm prior to the service at the church.   Interment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.  At other times the family will be at the home of Mark and Tammy Whisnant.

The family has entrusted Cecil Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Mrs. Bowman.
