Hospice helps patients, as well as families
Vivian with Santa’s Magic Elf
Hospice is about living life to the fullest and this was recently demonstrated in the lives of two of our Hospice families. The first is Jeanette Jones a patient who had on her “Bucket List” to take a Hot Air Balloon ride. Since being diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago, Jeanette’s family had not been on a family vacation or anywhere together. Emily Underwood, Jeanette’s Hospice Social Worker, contacted a Hot Air Balloon company in Asheville who agreed to take Jeanette and her daughter up for a view of the fall leaves. The weather was beautiful and they had a wonderful time, a memory together they will never forget.
The second is a patient (who would like to remain anonymous) at Wendover whose daughter was turning 5 years old. Little Vivian fell in love with the fish pond at Wendover while visiting her daddy who is a patient. She asked her Mom if she could have her Birthday party at Wendover out by the fish pond so her daddy would be close by and everyone could enjoy the party. Not knowing how much time her daddy had, staff members quickly made arrangements to make sure the Birthday happened and in grand fashion. Within hours, a “My Little Pony” cake had been ordered, balloons, decorations, and party favors had been secured. Clem Carter came and performed magic tricks and made balloon animals for Vivian and her friends. The Wendover staff wheeled her daddy’s bed down to the party so he could enjoy and interact with his little girl. The entire family was overjoyed and little Vivian kept telling everyone that it was the best birthday ever!
This is what Hospice is all about, living life to the fullest! There is so much support, comfort, and relief that Hospice can provide when patients are referred in time. Some people even live longer than their original prognosis once their pain and symptoms are under control. Hospice care is a service to support people by providing end-of-life care when the patient’s condition is considered terminal and the patient is no longer receiving curative treatment. A terminal diagnosis is defined as the patient having six months or less to live if the condition runs its normal course. The hospice team works with patients to manage pain and symptoms so that their remaining time may be spent in peace and dignity.
Dedicated to quality of life, hospice offers a support system of professional staff and volunteers who assist the patient and their family in meeting their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Hospice care stresses the importance of human needs that go beyond the physical care of the patient. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death; hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process.
Hospice is for people of all ages, not only the elderly – we work with babies who are born with conditions that will not allow them a full life to the very elderly, and everyone in between.
