Jack Hoover Newton
Jack Hoover Newton, 92, of Casar Road, Casar, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at White Oak Manor, Shelby.
Born in Cleveland County, NC on August 24, 1929, he was the son of the late David Zebulon Newton and Mary Alice Horton Newton.
Mr. Newton was a 1948 graduate of Casar High School and received a citation for twelve years perfect school attendance.
He was retired owner of Newton's Cabinet Shop and was a master at his craft and was a member of Casar United Methodist Church. Mr. Newton was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping, hunting, fishing and cooking with good friend Ed Fortenberry. He was involved in scouting for over 50 years and served as Casar Explorer Post 291 Leader and Casar Troop 291 Scoutmaster. He was the Mayor of Casar for many years and was the Shelby Exchange Club recipient of the Book of Golden Deeds. He was a longtime member of the Casar Volunteer Fire Department where he served as assistant chief and Upper Cleveland County Rescue. He was also a member of several civic clubs through the years.
Mr. Newton also served in the US Army 45th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, DZ Newton, Jr., Douglas Newton, Coy Newton, Cletus Newton, Jasper Newton, Sr., Edward Newton, Wilburn Newton and Harding Newton and five sisters, Ruth Newton Lindsey, Jewel Newton, Emma Newton Willis, Hattie Newton Bridges and Etta Newton Hipps.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Joan Campbell Newton; son, Joel Newton and wife, Tammy of Casar; daughter, Alisa Goad and husband, Larry of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Elliott Newton and wife, Tonya, Carrie Timms and husband, Josh, Winston McKee, Ian McKee, Avery McKee, Brooke Emory and husband, Josh and Kristin Goad; eight great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends in the sanctuary of Casar United Methodist Church Monday, October 18, 2021 from 2:00PM until 2:45PM.
A graveside service will be held on Monday at 3:00PM at Casar United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Lovelace officiating.
