Jack Thomas Hoyle
Jack Thomas  Hoyle, 91, of 126 St. Peter's Church Road, Belwood, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012 at his home.

Jack was born on May 27, 1921, in Belwood, NC to the late Hugh D. and Vivian T. Hoyle.  He married Wilma Gladys Mitchem, October 4, 1944.  They had three children Cynthia Jane, William Robert, and Joseph Lemuel Hoyle.

He graduated from Belwood High School, Lees McRae Jr College in 1940 and attended the US Navy Midship School in New York, NY and was commissioned as Ensign, February 7, 1941.  He served in the Navy  during World War II on the USS New York, USS Hughs during the battle at Midway, USS Sigsbee, and troop ship USS Gen. John Pope.  He was appointed to rank of Lieut.  Commander, October 3, 1945.

He entered the University of NC, Chapel Hill in the fall of 1945.  After Wilma finished her teaching degree in 1946 she moved to Chapel Hill with Jack and, they lived there until he finished his masters degree in June of 1949.  They moved to Lincolnton where Jack had been employed as a science teacher at Lincolnton High School.  In 1952 they moved to Belwood into the house Wilma lived as a child.  Then in 1979 he was selected as recipient of the Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award, sponsored by
Carolina-Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society.  Jack retired from Lincolnton High School in May of 1983. 

Jack joined Kadesh United Methodist Church in 1931, though after marrying in 1944, he moved his membership to St. Peter's United Methodist Church.  He taught Sunday school classes and held various offices in the church.  He was scout master for several years and also served on the Belwood Town Council.

In addition to his parents Jack was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Mitchem Hoyle in May of 2007.

He is survived by daughter, Jane Hoyle and husband Steve; two sons, Billy Hoyle and wife Debbie and Joe Hoyle and wife Pennie; sister, Jeannette Tillman; grandchildren, Angie Weathers and husband Steve, Todd Hoyle and wife Angie, Brian Hoyle, and Darin Hoyle; great-grandchildren, Amber Willis, Charles Hoyle, Dale Hoyle & wife, Amanda, Chanda Wortman and Leah Pruitt; and great-great-grandchildren, Lane Hoyle, Allison Hoyle, Haven Pruitt, Cassie Wortman, Ahlexa McConnell.

The funeral will be on Tuesday at 2:00PM at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Belwood with the Rev. Katherine Earley officiating. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes before the service.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
