James (Bubber) Alexander Farris

James (Bubber) Alexander Farris, 93, passed away Wednesday May 10, 2023 at CMC Main. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1947. Shortly after graduation he joined the US Air Force. He trained and served at Lackland Training Center in Texas and Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS as an Aircraft Mechanic and Flight Line Service until reassignment to Wiesbaden, Germany during the Berlin airlift period. He served as Crew Chief on the C-82 Aircraft into Tempelhof Airport in Berlin Germany for 13 months.

He received his honorable discharge in Nov. 1949. After 9 months of civilian life and his short enrollment in the N.C. Air National Guard, he was called back to service. He was stationed at Godman Field, Fort Knox, KY for several months during the Korean conflict. The 3 states wing, N.C., W. VA and KY, trained together and served in England together.

After returning home from England, he was reassigned to Greenville AFB in Greenville, SC. In 1952, he and Bettie Morehead were married in Shelby. They had two daughters, Jeanne and Cynthia. He also returned to work for Bell South where he retired December 31, 1991 after 42 years of service.

Mr. Farris is preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Bettie Jean Farris, and his parents, Hosea Emory Farris and Annie Belle Witherspoon, as well as his brother, Harry Milton Farris.

In addition to his two daughters, Mr. Farris is survived by his grandchildren, Josie, Alia and Alex Karout as well as his sister, Emory Ann Thomas and close family friend, Benton Kinzer.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 19, 2023 at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby.
