James Evon "Jim" Helms, age 86 of Cherryville Hwy passed away Friday, June 15, 2018 at Carolinas Healthcare System Cleveland. He was born July 20, 1931 in Gaston County to the late Kenneth Hugh and Fay Houser Helms. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church and retired after 23 years as Vice President of Insurance and Safety from Carolina Freight Carriers. He was a Korean War Veteran of the United States Air Force where he served 4 years and was stationed in England. Jim was a member of American Legion Post #100. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne with his Bachelor's degree. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. His greatest passion was spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Linda Hall Helms; children, Sherrie Helms Hayes and husband, Marty and Kenny Helms and wife, Laura; grandchildren, Evon Hayes and wife, Sam, Daniel Hayes and wife, Kerigan, Hunter Helms, and Brandon Helms; and great grandchildren, Braxton Hayes and Kade Hayes.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 18, 2018 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by Cherryville American Legion Post #100. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the home of Jim and Linda, 1600 Cherryville Hwy.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
