James Gary Johnson Sr., age 80 of Shelby, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, January 3, 2022.

He is survived by his son, James Gary "Tinker" Johnson Jr. (Jamie) of Lawndale, NC, two grandchildren, David Johnson (Kim) of Grover, NC, and Jennifer Melton (Josh) of Kings Mountain, NC, two great grandchildren, Makenzie Johnson and SaraBeth Melton, a brother, R.A. Johnson (Kay) of Indian Trial, NC, a sister, Lyndall Mull of Greenville, SC, a brother-in-law, Phillip Tindall of Summerville, SC, and a sister-in-law, Judy Wheeler of Durham, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born May 17, 1941 in Ware Shoals, SC, Gary was the son of the late Ralph Allgood Johnson and Zorah Craig Johnson and was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Cynthia Kay Tindall Johnson, two sisters, Ethel Mae Johnson and Ruth Alma Johnson, a sister-in-law, Hazel Tindall, and two brother-in-law's, Thomas Mull and Dan Wheeler.

Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family and friends. Gary also enjoyed shooting pool at the senior center with his friends.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 7, 2022 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Max Turner and Dr. Rit Varriale.
