James Henry Johnson

Sergeant James Henry Johnson, 92, of Lawndale, transitioned from his earthly house to his heavenly home on Friday, July 30, 2021, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Gastonia, NC.

He was a native of Cleveland County, NC . He was born December 12, 1928, to the late John Henry Johnson and Sue Bell Lumpkin Johnson.

He was a member of First Baptist Church Lawndale for many years. He attended Douglas High School. Mr. Johnson was called for duty in the Army for the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army earning the rank of Sergeant. After the military, he worked in environmental services for Corinth Reformed Church for 28 years. Following that, he worked at Hickory Manufacturing until his retirement.

James married Martha "Nan" Glover Johnson and out of that union, one son James Kavin Johnson and one daughter Mary Lynne Johnson of Shelby, NC were born; grandchildren Lenae Hill-Johnson (Barnwell) of Brooklyn, NY and Patrice Stroud-Johnson (Gooden) of Gastonia, NC. James had many of friends that knew him well; if it was playing a game of pool, shuffling a deck of cards, and watching different sports games. His biggest hobby of all was walking the streets of Lawndale and picking up loads of cans. Mr. Johnson was a huge advocate for politics and for getting the right one in for President. If you were behind on the news, he could give you a run down on every specific subject.

In addition to his father and mother proceeding in death by a brother Horrace "B" Johnson and Lee Arthur "Boot" Johnson.

He leaves fond memories to his sisters Mattie Belle Vinson, Lucy Ellen Vinson, Betty Ann Clark (John P. Clark) , and sister in law Willie Mae Hector Johnson of Lawndale. Nieces and nephews who were like his very own, and great nieces and nephews. Special Thanks to Shelby Manor Community, Pete Resources. We are much obliged to Doctor Tsimmeng Thao at Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Medicine who sincerely took the time to serve our loved one and provided exceptional service to the family.

The funeral service for Sergeant Johnson will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at 12:30 PM at First Baptist Church Lawndale. The service will be livestreamed on FaceBook starting at 12:15 PM. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 12:30 PM at the church and other times daily at 233 Mauney Rd. Lawndale between 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Mask are required. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloemortuary.com. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
