James "Jim" Edgar Monroe

James "Jim" Edgar Monroe, 88 of Shelby, passed away on September 10, 2023 at Wendover Hospice.

He was born September 18, 1934 in Cleveland County and was a son of the late Charles A. and Vertie Threatt Monroe.

Jim was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and a member of the Master Workers Sunday School Class. Many fun times were had as their class got together to enjoy day trips. He was a Charter member of the River Bend Golf Club, teeing off on opening day of the course, in 1966. Jim enjoyed the game of golf and all his many golfing friends. He was one of the two remaining members of the original club. Jim enjoyed gospel singing and was always ready to attend events throughout the county and state to listen to his favorite gospel groups, even going each year to the Southern Gospel Convention. He was employed by Dickson Auto Supply for many years and later at Putnam Distributors until his retirement.

Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Monroe of the home; son, James Clifton Monroe (Lisa, Aaron, Grayson) of Mooresboro, North Carolina; grandson, Billy James Monroe (Kristin) of Boiling Springs, North Carolina; brother, David (Gaye) Monroe of Shelby; sister-in-law, Nancy Monroe of Shelby and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his brothers, Gene and Douglas Monroe, both of Shelby.

A visitation will be on Thursday, September 14, 2023 in the sanctuary of Elizabeth Baptist Church from 10:00-11:00 AM, followed by funeral service at 11:00, with Dr. Rit Varriale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
