James Vernon Newton, Sr., 85, of Casar passed away on October 30, 2026 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby.

Vernon was born on July 27, 1941 in Cleveland County to the late Romie Vesco Newton and Maudie Bivens Newton. He was retired from Dover Textiles.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Vernon Newton, Jr.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 37 years, Anita Willis Newton; sons, Timothy Newton (Judy) and Shannon Willis; daughter, Susan Newton (Tammy); brother, Steve Newton (Ethel); two grandchildren, Tina Newton and Phillip Willis and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 31, 2026 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at 2:00pm at St. Paul Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Fulbright officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
