Jay Alexander Atwell, III

Mr. Jay Alexander Atwell, III, 63, of 4022 Hillview Circle, Shelby, died unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 while in China. He was the older of two children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jay A. Atwell, Jr. on Friday, September 7, 1951 in Charlottesville, VA.

Mr. Atwell grew up mostly in North Carolina, living in several towns due to his father's job transfers. He graduated from South Rowan High School in 1969 and attended UNC Charlotte where he met his wife Sandy.

Sandy and Alex married in 1971 and made Shelby their home in 1974. He was previously employed by Fasco, Lucas Automotive, and Vermont American/Robert Bosch Tool. At the time of his death, he was employed by Camco, a Greensboro, NC company, and working in China. For many years he was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts. He was also the owner of his own company, ACS of Shelby. Alex was dedicated to his family and touched the lives of many.

In addition to his wife, surviving loved ones include his daughter Melissa with granddaughter Britney; his son Josh and wife Jen with grandson Jameson; his son Jake and wife Sabrina with grandson Max; his brother Andy; his sister-in-law Patsy; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 15, from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 16, at Sunset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
