Jean Owen Crotts
SHELBY - Jean Owen Crotts, 88, of Shelby, NC passed away the morning of May 24, 2019. Jean was a native of Transylvania County, NC, one of eight children of the late Vincent and Nancy Elizabeth Lee Owen of Lake Toxaway, NC, born June 6, 1930.

Jean made her home in the rural New House community of Cleveland County, NC, with her husband Ralph of almost 69 years. She and Ralph enjoyed full lives of commitment to one another and raising their four children. They met in 1948 in Columbia, SC where both attended Columbia Commercial College. Jean and Ralph were married in August of 1950 and established their home in the Columbia area for the first 16 years of their marriage. All of their children were born in Columbia. Jean worked for several years for the Seibels Bruce Insurance Company before becoming a full-time homemaker.

Jean and Ralph moved their family from Columbia to Sullivan's Island, SC. They lived in the beautiful island community for less than two years before the family moved to Gastonia, NC and eventually Anchorage, Alaska. They relocated to Ralph's family's home community of New House in 1976 where they built a lovely home and have resided until the present.

In the 1980s, Jean completed the cosmetology program through Cleveland Community College. She received her Cosmetology License and opened an attractive styling salon in her home. Jean became well-known and appreciated in the community for her skill and compassion, while operating her business for almost 20 years.

Jean was involved in her various home communities in other ways through the years, actively participating in church, including Sandy Plains Baptist Church after she and Ralph settled near Shelby. She also worked as a teacher's aide in schools for several years. She is fondly remembered for her special gift of hospitality that was usually expressed to everyone she encountered throughout the years. She was an exceptional cook, seamstress and crafts-person and enjoyed the hard work of processing fruits and vegetables grown in family gardens for many years.

Jean had a wonderful personality and enjoyed visiting, serving and just loving others, during her lifetime. In her senior years she became the loving "Memaw" to her family and grandchildren and many others, including friends and house guests. She found delight in freely giving compliments and encouragement, as well as gifts, that she had either made or purchased.

Jean was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Jack and Jim Owen of Lake Toxaway, NC. She is survived to cherish her memory by her loving husband, Ralph of Shelby; brothers, Jerry Owen (Brenda) of Brevard, NC and Joe Owen (Gaye) of Lake Toxaway, NC; sisters, Joann (Fred) Galloway of Brevard, NC and Jonnie Fordyce and Jeanette Owen of Lake Toxaway, NC; sons, Ed Crotts (Susan) of Forest City, NC, Gary Crotts (Mackie) of Boiling Springs, SC and Rick Crotts (Judy) of Shelby, NC; daughter Nancy Crotts Eaker (MIchael) of Bessemer City, NC; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
