Joanne Scott Gaston Schenck, 89, passed away peacefully on March 25th with her family by her side.

Joanne was born on August 10, 1933 in Charlotte, NC to the late Harley B. Gaston and Mary Margaret Scott Gaston.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Michael Schenck Sr., her brother Judge Harley B. Gaston, Jr., sister-in-law Katherine B. Gaston, her beloved sister Margaret Gaston Bates and brother-in -law Charles Allen Bates.

Joanne is survived by her son Michael Schenck Jr. (Carol), her two daughters Ann Schenck Beam (David) and Catherine Schenck Miller (Mike). She was blessed with six wonderful grandchildren. Mary Catherine Beam Oliver (Ethan), Victoria Beam Courter (Matthew), Laney Schenck Putnam (Carson), Tripp Schenck, Jonathon Yesovitch and Michael Miller and great-granddaughter Eloise Margaret Oliver.

Joanne grew up in Belmont, NC and attended Belmont High School. She graduated from Duke University with a degree in Early Education. After a few years of teaching in Charlotte, she met and married Mike Schenck from Shelby.

Joanne was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Junior Charity League of Shelby. She loved spending time at the Dover YMCA, where she enjoyed exercise classes with her friends. She also loved playing bingo at Brookdale Shelby where she resided this past year. Her love of walking kept her happy and healthy. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and her friends.

The family would like to thank Atrium Healthcare for their excellent care and compassion during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions in memory of Joanne Schenck be sent to Central United Methodist Church of Shelby, North Carolina.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 31st from 11:00 a.m. until noon at Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, North Carolina. A private memorial service will be held for the family.
