Joe Lane Helms, age 86, died Sunday, July 30, 2017 at his home. Born in Mecklenburg County on August 23, 1930 he was the son of the late Dewey Homer Helms and Nell F. Holmes and William Alex Larkins. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Joe worked for Willis Coroon Insurance as an executive until he retired. Joe enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. In addition to his parents and step father, Joe is preceded in death by a step brother, William Alex Larkins, II.

Joe is survived by his wife of 27 years, JoAn Pasour Helms; a son, Joe Lane Helms II of Matthews and former daughter-in-law, Robin Douglas Helms of Matthews; a daughter, Tammy Maria Helms Settles and husband Rev. Russell Settles of Charlotte; stepsons, Kevin Lutz and wife Christine of Chapel Hill, and Eric Lutz and wife Tina of Durham; a step daughter, Karen Lutz of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Jared Lane Helms, Conner Douglas Helms, Ryan Lutz and Austin Pewitt.

Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Antioch Lutheran Church, 330 Old NC 277 Loop Road, Dallas, NC 28034. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Military Honors. Reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
