John went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Providence RI, on March 19, 1965 son of John and Pauline Dunivan, grandson of Barbara Alarie. John was a music teacher and began his Police career in RI then moved to NC to pursue his career with the Gaston County Police. After retirement he was Director of Safety and Security at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
In addition to his parents and grandmother he is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lisa McSwain Dunivan, sons, Joshua Pelletier of Needham, Mass., Ben Dunivan and wife Tracie, and Tyler Dunivan. One daughter Lauren Dunivan all of Cherryville, one brother, Kevin Dunivan and fiancée Roxanne of Paxton, Mass, one sister, Lori Lankford and husband Bryant of Cherryville, brother-in-law Dean McSwain and wife Leslie, sister-in-law Nina McLeymore and husband Darryl all of Cherryville. He was loved by six nieces and six nephews, one great niece and one great nephew and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by grandfather, Joseph Alarie, grandmother, Jacklyn Stevens, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lewis and Margaret McSwain.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Mt Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Key officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Carpenter’s Funeral Home other times at the home.
