On January 13, 2021, John "Johnny" Gene Turner, Jr. of Grover, NC passed away peacefully at Spartanburg Regional Hospital under the loving care of family, caregivers, doctors, and nursing staff.

Johnny was born on January 21, 1955, in Shelby, North Carolina to Martha "Mott" Hicks Turner and John Gene Turner. Beloved Son, Brother, and Uncle, he is survived by his sister, Vickie Turner Propst; brother-in-law Thomas Fred Propst Jr.; nephew Dr. John Propst; and niece Megan Propst Huebner, her husband Christopher Huebner and their two children Ellison and Jackson. Johnny is also survived by his Aunt Jo Ann Hicks, cousins Mickey Hicks, Todd Hicks, John Haga, Richard Gold, Sharon Gold Sizemore, and their families.

Johnny grew up with his loving family in Grover, NC, where he was a member of Grover First Baptist and participated in various community activities and local and regional Special Olympics events. He completed special education programs at The Children's Center of Shelby City Schools in 1977. Johnny attended day programs at the Parson Center of The Charles Lea Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Johnny became a full-time resident at the Charles Lea Center starting in 1986 where he last resided at the Johnson Fields Home. Johnny enjoyed frequent visits with family and received exceptional care and love from his caregivers at CLC throughout the years. He formed many heartfelt relationships and touched many hearts throughout his journey.

Johnny was very close with his family, who cared for and loved him all of his life. Johnny's Mother, "Mott", sister and brother-in-law, Vickie and Tom and family, were his biggest advocates. His mother often volunteered at Charles Lea Center and was an outspoken advocate for special needs children and adults at the county, state, and national level. Johnny was gentle, friendly, and kindhearted. He loved people. He enjoyed sports, referees and umpires, milkshakes, and animals. Johnny had a child-like spirit that was contagious, full of laughter, curiosity, and excitement for life. Johnny's life was a true gift from God. He was a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Graveside Service: Due to the pandemic, a private graveside service for immediate family and Charles Lea Center family only, at Grover Cemetery. Harris Funeral Home is serving the family.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request memorial contributions be made in Johnny's name to: The Charles Lea Center, at 195 Burdette Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307
