John V. Barner

Lieutenant Retired Colonel John V, Barner, passed away peacefully in Orange City FL. where he lived with his daughter, Vicki. John is preceded in death by wife of 52 years Corene C. Barner, and his son Donald also preceded by his parents Frank and Jewel Barner his brothers Samuel and Frank Calvin Barner and his sisters Lucinda, Carolyn Taylor, and Clara Famble. John is survived by his brothers Albert Barner of Valdosta, GA and Robert Barner (Barbara) of Selma, NC; sisters Donnis Barner of Kernersville, NC and Linda Barner of Lawndale, NC; seven children, Sharon Barner of Herndon, VA, Vicki Wade (Larry), Orange City FL, Jeffrey Barner (Rose) of Baltimore, MD, Stephen Barner (Janella) of Grayson, GA, Reginald Barner (Allyne) of New Orleans, LA and Subrena Barr (Olsen) of Richmond, VA; 16 Grand Children, 7 Great-Grand Children and a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a current wife, Virginia Ford-Barner of Pine Bluff, AR and her two daughters Victoria Ford (aka Vicki) of Maumelle AR, Erika Ford-Preval of Atlanta. John attended North Carolina A&T State University where achieved his BS degree in Agriculture and his commission in the US Army he attended Colorado State university achieving his Master's in Education he then began what would be a 24 year career in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He began his second career at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as an Administrator then he became the Director of Cooperative Education and went on the become the Director of Infrastructure until his retirement from the university system in early 2004. John was an active member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He was a member of St James United Methodist Church and later became a member of Damascus Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. John was active in the Pine Bluff community and received innumerable awards for his civic, professional and personal duties.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church in Polkville, NC. Burial will take place at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at the church. In addition, the family will be receiving friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday evening at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel as well as after the funeral service at the home of his sister, Linda Barner 227 London Road Lawndale. A repast will follow after the interment at Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
