Joseph David Wood
Joseph David Wood Born in “Irish Creek “Rockbridge County, Va - Joseph David Wood, of Shelby, NC, died December 10th, 2012, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's, at the age of 82. Our sadness at the death of our father, brother, husband, & grandfather is tempered by our extreme joy in the knowledge that he is with his Lord and Savior.  Joseph honorably and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a member of the Mosquito's 6147 Tactical Control Group.  
In addition to his parents, three sisters & one brother he is preceded in death by his daughter Kathy Wood McGinnis & grandson Rodney “Tyler” McGinnis. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Barbara Cordell Wood of Shelby. His Sister Melvin Bolton of Shelby NC & brother in law Thomas Cordell & wife Jane Cordell of Asheville, NC.  His children Joseph “David” Wood III of Odenton, MD, and Carol Wood of Sarasota, Fl, Kimberly Mull & her husband Rush Mull of Shelby NC, Michael Wood & his wife Millie Wood.  Grandchildren Matthew Joseph McGinnis & his Wife Carmen McGinnis of Rock Hill, SC, Jesse Greene of Shelby, NC, Evan Wood and Neil Wood of Columbia, MD,  and Sara Mac Wood of Shelby, NC. 
The family would like to thank White Oak Manor for their loving care of our beloved father & grandfather. 
Joe started his career in the finance business in 1957, during his profession he & Barbara lived in the following cities Oxen Hill, MD, Miami, Fl, Columbia, SC, Statesville, NC, Greenville, SC, Charlotte, NC,  Winston Salem, NC,  New Orleans, LA  Atlanta, GA, Long Island, NY, then finally residing in Shelby, NC for the past 42 years.  Joe Owned & operated Shelby Auto Sales for over 30 years. 
Joe was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans' (DAV), & a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.

Joseph was known for his cookouts that many in Shelby enjoyed over on Hill Street with his well known cooking & grilling skills.  Joe's death will leave a void in our lives but we are grateful for all the time we had with him. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 15th at 1:00 pm-2:30pm with a Graveside service  followed at 3:00pm officiated by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Steagald & David Blanton following at Sunset Cemetery, Shelby, NC.  The family during the week at other times will be receiving friends at 819 Hill Street, Shelby, NC.   In lieu of flowers please send donations to Life Enrichment Center, 110 Life Enrichment Blvd. Shelby, NC.
