Kathy Mauney Eplee

On Wednesday February 24 2021, Kathy Mauney Eplee, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 59. After a short struggle with pancreatic cancer, Kathy spent her last hours surrounded by family in the ICU at Rutherford Regional Hospital. Kathy is preceded in death by her father, Bill Mauney and her brother-in-law Johnny Holland. She is survived by her husband Mike Eplee, daughter Ashlee Eplee, mother Jane Mauney, sister and brother-in law Eleanor and Ron Mauney, brother and sister-in law Glenn and Sara Mauney, sister Tricia Holland, nephews William and Christopher Mauney, nieces Kiele and Lani Mauney, and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kathy was born in Raleigh and spent her childhood in Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School, then attended UNC Charlotte and shared a room with her best friend from Shelby. In 1981 Kathy started working at Computrol and met her future husband, Mike Eplee. On February 4 1989 they were married in a short and sweet ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends. For their honeymoon, Kathy and Mike chased sunsets in Key West, and always talked of retiring there. Kathy became a mother on May 4, 1990 when her daughter Ashlee was born. Professionally, Kathy wore many hats. Her main and longest position was office manager for Pleva USA, working closely with her husband for 26 years. Additionally, she worked at Bank of America for many years, and as a housecleaner alongside her sister Tricia and friend Peggy Almond. Kathy's biggest and most important job was that of wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was deeply devoted to Mike and Ashlee, creating a loving and comfortable home full of laughter and music. Kathy and Ashlee enjoyed many trips to New York City to visit her brother Glenn, exploring the parks and museums, even staying in the Waldorf Astoria. One of Kathy's favorite things was to throw holiday parties -- Halloween, Christmas, and New Year's -- inviting not only family and friends but also the neighborhood community. Everyone came out for these parties, enjoying the warm and welcoming environment that Kathy created. She was a lover of music and could always be found dancing to Led Zeppelin or belting out Tom Petty. Skilled in the kitchen, Kathy was passionate about cooking comfort food for the people she loved. After moving to Rutherfordton in 2003, Kathy became involved in the Rock Springs Church community. She found a tight-knit group of friends and enjoyed assisting with the semi-annual ham and chicken suppers which fed seemingly all of Rutherford County. An animal lover, Kathy had many precious pets, especially her small dogs Shelbee and Neena, who could always be found lying on her lap. Kathy wore her heart on her sleeve and opened her arms to everyone who crossed her path. She is missed by many people, and will forever live on in our hearts. A visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday March 6th at 2:00PM, at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, NC. All are welcome, and the family hopes to gather outdoors should the weather permit. Online condolences may be made at www.crowemortuary.com. Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the family of Kathy Eplee.
