Larry Bruce Benton, age 67, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Carolinas Healthcare Cleveland. Born in Cleveland County on July 15, 1950, he was the son of the late Wilbur Marcel and Mary Sue Putnam Benton. Larry attended Buffalo Baptist Church. He was a retired Captain of Detectives with the Shelby Police Department. Larry served the citizens of Shelby, Cleveland County, and the state of North Carolina for 30 years. He was a member of the 27 B Drug Task Force, Lieutenant in charge of Narcotics section for Shelby Police Department, Mecklenburg County Polygraph operator and K-9 officer. Larry was a member of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Association and the Fraternal Order of Police. Larry was a member of the Masonic Lodge #202 AF & AM. In free time Larry enjoyed cooking, fishing, and camping. However, being a grandfather was his greatest Joy.. In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by, a brother, Gary Dean Benton, and an infant sister.

Larry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jeanie Lazenby Benton; two sons, Kevin Benton and wife Leanne of Shelby, Keith Benton of Pa.; a daughter, Juliet Benton of Shelby; two sisters Diane Powell of Shelby, Tina Bowen and husband Ricky of Grover; a brother, Billy Benton and wife Cindy of Kings Mountain; sister-in-law, Sandy Benton of Grover; six grandchildren, Quinton Benton, Nicholas Benton, Brittany Benton, Justin Benton, Zachary Ruff, and Jordan Ruff; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral service, with Masonic Rites, will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Don Allen and Rev. Glenn Davenport officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
