Lawrence Junior Oliver

Lawrence Junior Oliver, 90, of Shelby, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Born in Cleveland County on November 6, 1933, he was a son of the late Glenn Penson "G.P." Oliver and Bessie Foster Oliver. He was retired from JP Stevens and Doran Textiles and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Lawrence was a loving husband, father, papaw, brother and friend who cherished every moment with his family and all the memories they made together. He loved spending time outdoors gardening, working in his yard, and hunting at the hunting club with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his carpentry projects such as building birdhouses, decks, and ramps as a way to minister to others. His jams, jellies, fried apple pies, and especially homemade peach ice cream, will be missed by everyone. For many years, Lawrence spent afternoons at Oliver's Hardware enjoying RC colas and visiting with customers and employees.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years Nell Wright Oliver; a brother, Dean Oliver and a sister Vickie Smith Rice.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Lynn Oliver, and Dale and Elizabeth Oliver all of Shelby; four grandchildren and spouses, Lindsay Oliver and Dan Sachs of Washington DC, Brittany and Caleb Wray, Craig and Tori Oliver, and Courtney and Clay Huffstetler all of Shelby; four great-grandchildren, Cylas and Olivia Wray, Oliver Huffstetler and Camden Oliver; three brothers, Henry Oliver and wife Shirley of Shelby, Jerry Oliver of Kings Mountain and David Oliver and wife Annie of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Ruby Ledford of Lawndale, Clara Crawford of Kings Mountain, and Evelene Thompson of Kings Mountain; his beloved beagle Sarge and his many loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Lawrence's caregivers Charlotte; Donna, Sharon, Karen, Teresa and other staff of Helping Hands; and Hospice Cleveland County for all of their love and support.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 2:00 PM Bethel Baptist Church with the Dr. Tim Sims officiating. Mr. Oliver will be placed in the church thirty minutes before the service.
