Mr. Lemuel "Lem" Jay Hipps, 79 of Shelby, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Carolinas HealthCare System in Shelby.
He is survived by wife of 59 years, Jewel Bridges Hipps of the home, three children, Keith Hipps and wife Kathy of Shelby, NC, Robin Patrick and husband Mike of Shelby, NC, and Kim Ledbetter and husband Steve of Shelby, NC, eight grandchildren, Michelle Meier and husband Aaron of Shelby, NC, Mary Kathryn Elmore and husband Nate of Charlotte, NC, Erin Hipps of Shelby, NC, Dawn Beason and husband Jim of Shelby, NC, Brooke Brack and husband Marshall of Shelby, NC, Lauren Patrick of Shelby, NC, Amelia Ledbetter and fiancé Andrew Smith of Charlotte, NC, and Gavin Ledbetter of Shelby, NC, six great grandchildren, seven sisters, Mary Jane Izokovic and husband Larry of Shelby, NC, Ella Grisso of California, Nancy Glenn of California, June Jamison and husband Johnny of Shelby, NC, Judy Morrison of Rutherfordton, NC, Sheila Halderman and husband Bill of Idaho, Dezaree Martin and husband Steve of Morganton, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born August 9, 1938 in Burke County, Mr. Hipps was the son of the late Horace Hipps Sr., and Mary Etta Newton Hipps and was preceded in death by two brothers, Jake Hipps and Eddie Hipps and two sisters, Ada Haimes and Georgia Barnhill.
Lem was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and cooked breakfast for the Men on Missions for many years. He owned and operated Hipps Roofing Company in Shelby. He enjoyed golfing at Riverbend golf course, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lem always brought a smile to your face and will be missed dearly by those that knew him.
The family would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff at the ICU unit at Carolinas HealthCare in Shelby for the loving care that they gave Lem during his stay there.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Cleveland Funeral Services. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
