Leon George Barry

Leon George Barry, 102, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026, at his home in Shelby, North Carolina.
Born on April 26, 1923, in Essex, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John Barylewicz and Anna Kamazyn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Walter, and his sister, Helen.
Lee proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, taking part in the Pacific conflict aboard the USS Independence, USS Cebu, and USS Hector.
Following his military service, he pursued a career as a mechanical engineer. In 1974, he brought FASCO Industries to Shelby and made it his permanent home. As Plant Manager of the Shelby branch, he played an instrumental role in its success and growth.
Over the years, he grew to love the foothills of North Carolina and became an avid hiker, completing the Appalachian Trail five times. He accomplished his final hike at the remarkable age of 81.
Lee is survived by his son, Craig L. Barry (Elaine) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and his daughter, Susan Vasquez (Luis) of Shelby, NC. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Hillary Barry Coke (Andrew) and their children, Forrest and Parker; Hunter Barry; and Haley Nicholl Barry.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Ascension Lutheran Church of Shelby. The family will receive friends following the service church fellowship hall.
