Les Roark honored with award
Former Mayor Ted Alexander, Les Roark and Mayor Stan Anthony
Keep Shelby Beautiful presented the “Fred Blackley Keep Shelby Beautiful 2011 Service Award” to Les Roark at its annual awards luncheon on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 held at the Don Gibson Theatre. Mayor Stan Anthony made the award presentation to Les before an audience of family, friends, and City officials.
Mayor Anthony stated that “Les is deserving of this award because of his commitment to enhance and improve the City of Shelby’s beauty for the past 50 years. It all begin when as a City Councilman, Les, worked to establish the Appearance Commission in 1972, which today is known as the Keep Shelby Beautiful Commission. Les believed that such a commission would help to promote the general welfare of the citizens of Shelby.  Because of Les and what he started so many years ago, Keep Shelby Beautiful will celebrate its 40th anniversary in January. Because of his dedication and love for Shelby, the mission of Keep Shelby Beautiful to enhance the quality of life for Shelby’s citizens through beautification will continue to grow for generations to come.
