Livestock Show Dedicated in Memory of Phyllis Elmore
Students from Burns High School assist the participants of North Shelby with their goats.
For several years, Mrs. Phyllis Elmore coordinated a livestock show that allowed the students of the Burns High School Health Sciences and Agriculture classes to assist students of North Shelby School to participate in agricultural events. The North Shelby students have a variety of physical and mental challenges. Through this very special show, they were able to show their goat and be a part of the livestock show. Mrs. Elmore was a teacher at Burns in the Health Sciences Department and she passed away last year after a battle with cancer. Before her death, she expressed her desire for the program to continue. Because of her passion, her husband Andy and her family combined their efforts with the Burns High School Health Sciences and Agriculture Department, Mr. Reithoffer from Reithoffer Shows (which presents the Shows on the Midway at the Cleveland County Fair) and the NC Cooperative Extension Agency to continue the event this year. The show was held at North Shelby School in the Hearts and Hooves Therapeutic Riding Arena on October 2, 2013. The participants were each awarded a trophy and a stuffed animal, provided by Mr. Reithoffer. Mrs. Elmore’s dream of working with special students and agriculture is being kept alive through the efforts of these caring people.
