Local Special Olympics Team Wins Gold In National Softball Tournament
A local team won a gold medal in the 2012 Special Olympics North America Softball Invitational Tournament in Oklahoma City, held Sept. 22-23.
The Cleveland County team was one of thirty-three participating in the tournament, and competed as the N.C. Mustangs, the only team from North Carolina. Teams were divided into divisions, and the Mustangs beat the Iowa Panthers for the gold medal in their division.
The tournament was sponsored by the Moose Association of America, which covered the cost of housing and all meals while the teams were in Oklahoma City.
“Our team was honored to have been chosen to be a part of this event,” said Carol Goforth, coordinator of the Special Olympics Cleveland County.
Team members were Brian Black, Kierra Bostic, Jerish Byers, Chris Campbell, LaMorris Campell, LeRoy Degree, Eugene Fisher, Patrick Jones, Jan Kelly, Maquise Ledbetter, Lionel Littlejohn, Brian Oliver, Jessy Riley, Kilo Smarr and Davaughia Snipes.
Coaches were Heather Kauffman, James Littlejohn, Pat McDonald and Kevin Roberts.
