Lois Genevieve Smith Culbertson, 80, of Shelby, NC, went home to be with the Lord peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Atrium Health Cleveland.

Born on May 31, 1945, Lois was a native of Corry, Pennsylvania, and the daughter of the late Martin and Genevieve Smith.

Lois dedicated nearly 30 years of service to the public school system before retiring. A longtime member of Lafayette Street Church, she faithfully sang in the choir and was devoted to her church family and worship. Lois found great joy in spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed sitting on the porch swing, taking afternoon naps, and faithfully attending Sunday worship services. Her love for family and quiet, simple pleasures brought warmth to everyone who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Whippo and Wanda Miller.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Earl George Culbertson Jr.; her sons, Mark E. Culbertson and fiancé Michelle Cochrane, and Michael S. Culbertson and wife Angela; and her daughter, Melissa C. Mathis and husband Jeff. She is also survived by her sisters, Wilmina Vanderhoof of Titusville, PA, and Shirley Ransom of Erie, PA; her brother, John Smith of Celorn, NY; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her extended church family at Lafayette Street Church.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Lafayette Street Church with Pastor Tonya Garrison officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
