Loran Poe Walker, Sr.

Loran Poe Walker, Sr., age 93, died Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Hospice Wendover. Born in Rutherford County on November 28, 1923 he was the son of the late Troy Washington and Myra Jemima Watkins Walker. Poe was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where he was a member of the Master Worker's Sunday School Class, sang in the choir and the men's quartet. Poe served in Patton's Army during WWII in Europe and was in The Third Armored Division. He received five Bronze Service Stars and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Poe worked in road construction, and then in sales for several car dealerships before he retired. He went back to work for Putnam Distributors part time for 20 years before retiring again at the age of 86. He was a people person who never met a stranger. He was a loving and devoted husband, dad, granddad, and great granddad and was a blessing to the entire family and all that knew him. In addition to his parents, Poe is preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Walker and two sisters, Merle Richards and Ibera Isaacs.

Poe is survived by his wife of 74 years, Floy Garver Walker; their children, Cindy Hamrick and husband Rick of Shelby, Poe Walker Jr. and wife Linda of Toano, Virginia, and Brent Walker and wife Susie of Shelby; four grandchildren, Lisa Humphries, Jimmy Deal Jr., Tracy Walker and wife Wendy, and Casey Walker, and two great grandchildren, Kaylee Hamrick and Alena Walker.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2:30 pm at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Dr. Rit Varriale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Full Military Honors. The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm in the sanctuary.
