Loretta Margaret Patton

SHELBY - Loretta Margaret Patton, 98, passed away on Saturday, September 09, 2017 at Hospice of Cleveland County surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Leon and Leona Remazon Wetmore on September 15, 1918. She is predeceased by her husband, John Patton; one daughter, Geraldine Glenn; one granddaughter, Teresa Gregory; one great-great grandson, Chris Newman.

Loretta leaves behind to cherish her memories her children, Don Newman (Earlene) of Shelby, Rita Freer (Tom) of Florida, David Morris of Shelby: six grandchildren, Donna, Teresa, Donnie, Gina, Loretta and D.J.; fourteen great-grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren.

Patton is a New York native and went to high school in Buffalo, New York where she lived on her own from the age of 15. She took three years of high school classes and worked at night as a cabaret singer and dancer. At the age of 17, she had to quit school and support herself. Throughout her 75 year working career, Patton wore many hats and worked all of the jobs without ever earning a high school diploma. For years she worked as an executive secretary, a waitress, a caretaker for the elderly and an income-tax preparer. At one time Patton had over 500 clients for her income-tax service. As Patton stood on stage in front of her fellow students, instructors, and family on graduation day, Loretta played the piano, knit, crochet and read books. She graduated from Cleveland Community College in 2010 at the age of 92 with her GED.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Crossroad Rescue Ministry Chapel, 206 Mt. Sinai Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152 with Pastor Kyle Smart officiating. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service.
