Lou Alice Hamrick Whisnant

Lou Alice Hamrick Whisnant, age 98, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, December 23, 2018. Born in Cleveland County on December 27, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin Hamrick and Emma Jane Cline Hamrick. Lou Alice grew up in Fallston where she attended Fallston High School. She attended Mars Hill College for two years prior to transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill where she graduated with a B.A. in 1941. She lived and worked in Charlotte after graduation before returning to Fallston to be closer to family. Lou Alice was a former member of Fallston Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, and was a G A leader and R A Leader. While working in Shelby, she met and later married attorney Joseph C. "Joe" Whisnant, Sr. Lou Alice was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church in Shelby where she was a volunteer in various positions. She also volunteered at Cleveland Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Shelby Junior Charity League. She was a talented amateur artist having shown pieces in local art exhibits. She enjoyed playing bridge, in the Dutch Club, with good friends and continued to play well into her nineties. She was also a member of the 20thCentury Book Club. In addition to her parents, Lou Alice is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Whisnant Sr., and brothers, D. S. Hamrick, Dixon Hamrick and Ab Hamrick.

Lou Alice is survived by her son, Joseph C. "Joe" Whisnant, Jr. and wife Mary Robbins"Robbie" Shannonhouse Whisnant and granddaughters, Mary Robbins Whisnant and Alice Herne Whisnant all of Charlotte. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 11:00 am at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Barden officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour before the service from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in the fellowship hall.

The family would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers that have taken great care of Lou Alice over the last several years. They are also grateful to Hospice for their assistance in recent weeks.
