Luminaries To Light Court Square on Dec 20, 2013
The tradition of luminaries on Court Square in Shelby will continue on Friday, December 20th, 2013 as a way to honor and remember loved ones during the holiday season. Hosted by Uptown Shelby Association each year, the lighted tributes are a special way to recall memories of friends and family while contributing funds to improve the Uptown Shelby Christmas lights.
The Christmas holidays are a time for memories and the luminaries are a great way to acknowledge a family member, friend, coach, or teacher. Seeing the luminaries lit on the Square reminds us of the light these special individuals have brought to our lives.
All proceeds from the luminary event are used to maintain and improve the lights in the trees around the historic Court Square. Each year, the Uptown Shelby Association spends several thousand dollars to repair and replace the lights that adorn the trees in Uptown during the holiday season. “Most people would be surprised by the amount of work involved in maintaining these lights from year to year,” commented Tricia Woodland, Events & Marketing Manager for Uptown Shelby Association. “The strands are constantly battered by the elements, but City staff does a great job repairing the lights for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to their efforts, Uptown is transformed into a festive, twinkling setting for holiday shopping and events.” With plans for significant purchases of new lights in the future, the luminary fundraiser holds even more importance.
Luminaries can be purchased for $5 each. The name of the person being honored or remembered will be printed on the side and lit by an electric candle. Luminary orders should be submitted to the Uptown Shelby Association by December 6, 2013.
Forms to purchase luminaries were enclosed with the City of Shelby utility bills and are also available at www.uptownshelby.com and 211 South Trade Street in Uptown Shelby. For more information, please call Uptown Shelby Association at 704.484.3100.
