Mabel Matheny Hardin

Mabel Matheny Hardin, 98, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, June 29, 2021, surrounded by family at her daughter's home in Buford, GA. She was born to the late Thomas Clinton and Evelyn Hoy Matheny in Rutherford County, NC. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, H. Doyle Hardin, in 1983, and her siblings, Reba, Polly, and Elijah. She was cherished by and will forever be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Donna Hardin of Greenville, SC, and her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jerry Carter of Buford, GA; her grandchildren, Jennifer and Alex Zotos of Chattanooga, TN, Jessica and Travis Haynes of Cleveland, GA, John and Shannon Carter of Flowery Branch, GA, Adrienne and Cody Greenway of Greenville, SC, and Drew Hardin of Greenville, SC; and her great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Brantly, Ally, Alayna, Sophia, Isabella, Abigail, Katie, Elijah, and Jamie, who rest assured they will be reunited with His good and faithful servant.

Mabel was a member of Aldersgate UMC for 59 years where she poured her energy and gifts into the Body of Christ. While in Shelby, until moving to Georgia 6 years ago, she played the piano and ministered to the residents of many senior centers several days each week for over 40 years. In recognition of her services with the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby, NC, she was nominated for and won the J.C. Penney Golden Rule award along with the Cleveland County Governor's Award, a 1999 Representative. She was also the primary caregiver of her mother and husband over the course of 15 years. Selflessly serving her family and others was her passion and her purpose. Her kindness, gentle smile, and empathy lifted spirits and left a forceful impact on all who knew her. While living in Georgia, she was a faithful member of Sugar Hill Church. Her favorite pastime was excelling in the game of Scrabble with friends and family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, 11:00 am at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel in Shelby, NC, with the Rev. Carrie Carpenter officiating.
