Mama Taught Us To. . . “Have Faith, Never Give Up and Keep Going”
Tim Howard
Tim Howard and his brother Rodney live together at Peak Resources in Shelby. They both have Hallervorden-Spatz disease. It is a movement disease (neuromuscular disorder) and usually begins in childhood. Their sister, Melenie Shumate, like their mother, is an LPN. She will unabashedly and proudly tell you that the emphasis on her brothers’ conditions should never be about their disabilities, but more about their capabilities.
Spending time with Tim and Rodney will put you in an awe inspiring state. Rodney is 44 years old and cannot communicate as well as his younger brother Tim who is 39. Tim struggles but does very well with some assistance and his mind is keen. In spite of it all, he has a message that he wants to be heard.
Tim has been at Peak Resources for twenty-two years. He recently heard a resident of Peak that was mad at God because He put her in a situation to be in the Peak facility. Tim asked why? “Why is it easy to get mad at God?” He conveyed his thoughts and they were written down. He stated that “We all get mad at God, because when we ask Him to do something for us and it doesn’t go the way we want it to, we turn our back on Him. One night, I was laying the bed and talking to God about this resident. Then I looked at myself and Rodney’s life. You know what? We have never blamed God for the way we are. We never felt the reason to feel anything against God, especially anger. Sometimes in life we have to accept the things that God does for us. No matter what the call, it should not matter in your heart, just because you have a sickness or something not pleasant. When I was a kid, I would say: Mama, why do we have this disease and Melanie our sister doesn’t? Mama would respond, I don’t know Tim. A little bit of me would get jealous because she and Trisha, our other sister, got to do so much and me and Rodney couldn’t. God gave us His Son to show how much He loves us. What do we do? We get mad at Him. Why do we get mad at God? We are only evil people and God is the only one who is perfect. So, I ask you to look deep into your heart and ask, Why?”
Tim watches over his brother Rodney. He loves music and watches television. He also loves pizza - pepperoni, sausage and hamburger especially. He’ll tell you that he has never been mad at God. He thinks often about what his Mama always told him: “Have faith, never give up and keep going!”   - MA Andrews
