She was born in Gaston County, NC, daughter of the late Charlie Clayton and Mary Ella Sellers.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Wayne Bess; son, Robert Wayne Bess; daughter, Patricia Church; sisters, Ruth Hoyle, Edna Craft; brothers, Earl Sellers, Walter Sellers, Chatman Sellers and J. L. Sellers. Mrs. Bess was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Kings Mtn. NC
