Martha Marie Mauney Edwards

Born Martha Marie Mauney Edwards on July 26, 1920, she returned to her Heavenly Father on November 18, 2012.  She was the earthly daughter of Nellie Bechtler and William White Mauney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, George McClure Edwards, Jr. and eight siblings: Frances McEntire, William Mauney, Nelson Mauney, James Mauney, Mildred Warlick, Matthew ‘Pat’ Mauney, Inez Byrum, and Charles Mauney, and an infant daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Beverly Ponder of Hickory; son, George Myron Edwards III of Lawndale; one granddaughter, Ellen Marie Lail and husband Tim of Newton; one Great Grandson, Brandon Douglas Williams of Boone; two step great grandchildren, Dylan and Cierra Lail of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker and retired from Jenkins Foods in New House.  She enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, canning, and most of all, spending time with her family.

Her family history dates back to Rutherford County where they established the Bechtler Mint, having the distinction of minting the first $1 gold coin, even before the United States Mint. She was also a descendant of the three Mauney brothers, signers of the Tryon Resolves. In addition, she was the granddaughter of pioneer Marcus Mauney, Civil War Veteran, County Commissioner, and donator of the land on which Union Baptist Church now stands. She led an unpretentious and assuming life, but proudly served her community and family with pride.  As a young girl, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls under Eastern Star.  While raising her family, she served as President of the Polkville School PTA and she and her husband formed the Polkville Chapter of the National Order of the Grange.  She served on the Cleveland County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee and also cooked for the Polkville Fire Department’s annual Turkey Dinner fundraiser.

Her Mother gave her the best wisdom a young bride could receive, “Where he goes to church, you go,” and that she did.  Serving Clover Hill United Methodist Church for over forty years as Sunday School teacher for both youth and adults, choir member, counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF), and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women (UMW).  She also served on numerous church boards and was involved in the annual church barbeque to raise funds for various church projects.

Her family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Hospice of Cleveland County and White Oak Manor- Shelby.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Clover Hill Methodist Church.  The Rev. David Miner, Sr. will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:45pm in the church fellowship hall prior to the service.
