Martha Sue Rhinehart

Martha Sue Rhinehart came into this world early and was tiny in size and weight. She loved to tell how she only weighed 2 pounds and 13 ounces or so. Her eyes would grow wide as she told how she was so little; her parents carried her home in a shoebox and made her a bed in a dresser drawer. Sue was the only girl, and she gave her brothers a run for their money. Her Momma, Granny Myers told me Sue loved to talk and the neighbors had a telephone. She begged to go to the neighbors to use their phone. She was so fascinated with the telephone that her Dad, Smiley Myers, had a telephone put in so she could use it whenever she wanted.

She remained small in stature her entire 89 years on this earth, but what she lacked in size she more than made up for in courage. She wasn't afraid of anyone and would not back down if someone confronted her or her five boys. She loved her boys and did everything she could within her power to provide for them, protect them and love them. As her boys grew up and began to marry, she would tell them, "I hope you give me a red-headed granddaughter with freckles!"

As daughters-in-law and grandchildren started coming along, she was given a very prestigious title - "Momma Sue!" She became well known among church members at Charity Baptist Church, Clearview Baptist Church, and Faith Baptist Church as Momma Sue. People in the community and co-workers as well called her Momma Sue. She's a legend in Shelby and surrounding areas for sure.

Momma Sue had a simple life; she didn't want fortune and fame. She had all she wanted in life - her family and her friends. And her camera! She would snap that picture whether you were ready or not. She loved taking pictures. She loved going to church. She called three churches home in the last 30 years, Charity Baptist in Fallston when her late husband was alive. Clearview Baptist in Grover became her home church for many years afterward. When she became wheelchair bound and could not get up and down the stairs at Clearview, Faith Baptist Church and their members welcomed her into their congregation. She said she just didn't feel right if she missed church.

Martha Sue Rhinehart came into this world a tiny bundle of joy on April 23, 1934. She left this world a daughter of the King on June 20, 2023, with a testimony of overcoming many obstacles in life and left a legacy of loving her family and her God.
