Mary Elizabeth Borders

Miss Mary Elizabeth Borders, 73, of Shelby, NC passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020, at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, NC. She was born on December 2, 1946 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Betsy Gwendolyn Hogue and the late J.C. Borders.

Mary was a graduate of Shelby High School and was amongst the first African Americans to help integrate the school system at that time. She went on to graduate from Cleveland Community College with a certificate in childcare. Mary was employed in the textile industry for many years and worked briefly in daycare before finding her passion in the dietary department of White Oak Manor where she worked until her retirement.

Mary was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church where she attended until her health declined.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Wanda Robertson.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, one brother, Bradley Hogue of Hickory, NC; two nephews, Brandon Robertson of Shelby, NC and Frank Ross (Georgette) of Gaffney, SC; nieces, Carla Haynes (Maurice) of Shelby, Donna Robertson (Kevin) of Creedmoor, NC and Mikki Robertson of Winston-Salem, NC; special friends, Janice Dickens, Juanita Allen, Lucrecia Brooks and Angela Ellis and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and other friends.

The funeral service for Miss Borders will be private. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook starting at 12:45 PM on Friday. The family will be receiving friends on Friday October 9, 2020, at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel from 12:30 PM until 1:00 PM and other times at 709 Charles Road in Shelby.
