Mary Elizabeth Duncan Reid

Mary Elizabeth Duncan Reid, 63, of Shelby, died Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William and Moree Johnson Grant. Elizabeth graduated from Shelby High School and Gardner-Webb University. She retired after 30 years of service with NC Department of Justice. After retirement, she worked part time at Atrium Health and Cleveland County Sheriff's Department. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg. She enjoyed reading and working outdoors with her flowers. Her greatest Joy was spending time with her family. She felt her greatest accomplishment in life was her two sons. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne M. Duncan; and sister, Kay Duncan Jones. She is survived by her sons, Grant Reid and wife Bernadette of Miami, FL and Logan Reid and wife Kelly of Shelby; grandsons, Connor Thomas Reid, Calvin Lane Reid and Bryce Patrick Reid; brothers, William "Bill" Duncan of Boiling Springs and Craig Duncan and fiancée Helen Curtis of Shelby; sister, Doris Duncan of Shelby; sister-in-law, Mary Duncan of Tryon; special niece, Dr. Lori Nanney; and many other nieces and nephews. The family would like to give their love and thanks to her best friend of many years, and who she thought of as a sister, Donna Morrison Carpenter of Belwood, who was a dedicated caregiver during her illness. Also a thank you to Dan and Tamara Gold, Nancy Osterhaudt and Jackie Hamrick for their love and support. A service to celebrate Elizabeth's life will be held 2pm, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Pete Gilbert officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, NC 28150 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
